Benjamin Franklin in London

ben franklin house

Our award-winning education days take place every Tuesday in the House’s Student Science Centre. Based on the London life and work of Benjamin Franklin, our engaging activities link to and illuminate the National Curriculum. I'm excited to be involved with Junior Achievement because it provides an opportunity to educate and inspire the next generation of financial and technology leaders. Being able to share my experience and help shape young minds, foster financial literacy, and empower students to make informed career decisions and financial goals is a tremendous opportunity. JA is a great community service medium for experiential learnings for aspiring high school students who are looking at meaningful careers in making an impact on brighter financial outcomes for all. Outside the White House today is Lafayette Park, where a the bronze statue is thought to portray the Marquis de Lafayette petitioning the French national assembly for help for the Americans in the fight for independence.

Hewson had been a lecturer at a prominent anatomy school run by William Hunter but left after the men had a falling out. Once he moved in with Franklin, he ran his own anatomy school out of the basement, which accounts for the remains. There is proof of this thanks to liquid mercury found on turtle bones and vermillion coloring connected to dog bones that were found in the basement.

This small merchant’s house, near the River Thames and not far from the Houses of Parliament, and where Franklin lived between 1757 and 1775, is the only one of his homes on either side of the Atlantic that still survives. Craven Street was at the very centre of Franklin’s domestic life from the first week he arrived in London in 1757 to the day he left in March 1775. In that time, Franklin spent only a short eighteen months back in Philadelphia. In London, Franklin had an extremely strong platonic relationship with his widowed landlady, Margaret Stevenson, and was like a father to her daughter Polly.

In 1753 the Royal Society awarded Franklin the Copley Medal, the 18th century equivalent of the Nobel Prize. The British government’s denunciation of Franklin before the Privy Council, in the wake of the Boston Tea Party, reflected a breakdown in Franklin’s relationship with ministers, but it did not end his search for peace. In early 1775, Franklin and William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, finalized their plan for settling the Anglo-colonial dispute.

The basement, which was a windowless room under the garden, contained the remains of 28 human bodies. Analysis of the remains found that they were about 200 years old, which placed them in the home at the same time Franklin resided there. As Mount Vernon is to George Washington and Monticello is to Thomas Jefferson, 36 Craven Street in London is to Benjamin Franklin.

Governance – Benjamin Franklin House is managed by Director Dr Márcia Balisciano and a Board of Governors, that is chaired by John Studzinski. The Board provides the strategic direction of Benjamin Franklin House and meets on average four times a year. For nearly sixteen years between 1757 and 1775, Dr Benjamin Franklin – scientist, diplomat, philosopher, inventor, Founding Father of the United States and more – lived at 36 Craven Street. While he may have been in London as chief colonial diplomat, his time here encompassed much more than politics. Facilities include the Benjamin Franklin House Shop and restrooms located in the basement. Benjamin Franklin House runs an annual Literary Prize in which people interpret a Benjamin Franklin quote in its significance today.

Uncover the history of Benjamin Franklin’s only surviving home

Hewson had logged notes about experiments that match up with this evidence. Franklin spent 16 years living and working at his London home on 36 Craven Street before coming back to America in 1776. Over two hundred years later, as the home was being transformed into a museum, the incredible discovery was made.

Hewson was an early practitioner of anatomy, and his need for privacy was tied up in the complicated regulations around dissection at the time. The understanding that dissections and comparative anatomy were useful for medical advancements was more commonplace, but the issue was finding cadavers. A law passed in 1752 allowed for the dissection of executed murderers, but there weren't nearly enough bodies to go around.

So while bodies in Franklin's basement might conjure up ideas that a Founding Father was harboring dark secrets, the truth is less nefarious. While it's likely that Franklin knew about Hewson's school, the Friends of Benjamin Franklin House believe that it's unlikely he participated in the actual dissections. Researchers think that 36 Craven was an irresistible spot for Hewson to establish his own anatomy lab. The tenant was a trusted friend, the landlady was his mother-in-law, and he was flanked by convenient sources for corpses. Bodies could be smuggled from graveyards and delivered to the wharf at one end of the street, or snatched from the gallows at the other end.

After the death of the Earl of Craven, his property passed in 1697 to William, 5th Earl of Craven. William Craven the Younger eventually decided that his Strand property was ripe for development, and after raising some capital by mortgaging the ground, he  proceeded to pull down the houses in Spur Alley and Brewer’s Lane. It holds England’s highest Grade I heritage listing and retains a majority of original features including the central staircase (which Franklin said he used for regular exercise!), flooring and panelling.

When he was done with them, Hewson simply buried whatever was left of the bodies in the basement, rather than sneak them out for disposal elsewhere and risk getting caught and prosecuted for dissection and grave robbing. Made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, it complements our in-House Historical Experience, where time, place and story are evoked through performance, sound, and digital projection. It is an integral part of a visit to Benjamin Franklin House, but we are making it available online until we can open the doors of 36 Craven Street widely again.

The French government provided military assistance, including troops, naval support and supplies. The support was vital to the pivotal triumph of the Continental Army at Yorktown in 1781. Without French aid, the American Revolution would probably have failed; with it, the British were defeated. Douglas’s father was a Hollywood titan; Franklin’s was a candle and soap maker from England who married twice and had 17 children. Born in Boston, Franklin left school aged 10 and began an apprenticeship in his brother’s print shop at 12. He ran away at 17, had a spell in London then set up a print shop in Philadelphia and began to publish the Pennsylvania Gazette.

It was with Franklin’s help that Hewson was ultimately elected into the Royal Society — the U.K.’s national science academy. “[Franklin] thought [Hewson] was a polite and promising young man,” Balisciano says. Celebrating creativity and promoting a positive culture by spotlighting the best sides of humanity—from the lighthearted and fun to the thought-provoking and enlightening.

It is believed that, during this time, he carried out dissections in the basement. They were found by a worker who discovered a thigh bone sticking out of a pit in the basement that was about 3 feet by 3 feet wide. Police continued the excavation, and 1,200 bone fragments were ultimately pulled from the pit. Many of the bones showed signs of surgical cuts, and one skull even had holes in it. One of the best ways to visit Benjamin Franklin House is through their ticketed events.

Given the Grade I nature of the building and the different levels of the building, there is no wheelchair access. For nearly two decades leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Franklin lived in London in a house at 36 Craven Street. More than 200 years later, 15 bodies were found in the basement, buried in a secret, windowless room beneath the garden. A visit to Benjamin Franklin House can support both History and Politics at A Level. On the Historical Experience, students will learn about the excitement and uncertainty of Franklin’s years in London leading up to the American Revolution. They will also receive a talk from the Education Manager which delves deeper into Franklin’s political role.

These include the Historical Experience, in which the house becomes a stage for the theatrical retelling of Franklin’s story, and the Architectural tour, in which the story of the Georgian building itself is explored. Visitors learn about the various roles Franklin filled during his lifetime, including his work as a printer, a scientist, a diplomat and a founder of civic institutions. Individual rooms in the museum reflect different aspects of Franklin’s personality and character traits, as he was known to be strategic, rebellious, curious and full of wonder. The Benjamin Franklin Museum also showcases how Franklin embodied the spirit of the 18th century and how many of his ideas still resonate today.

Today the site is a Grade I listed building and operates as a museum examining the time Franklin spent in London as well as his wider life and work. Many of the house’s original features remain, such as the floorboards, ceilings, and staircases, allowing visitors to walk the very footsteps of the famous statesman. Today, the House brings Franklin’s time in London to life for visitors through the Historical Experience, Architectural Tours, and an engaging calendar of events. Our vibrant, free education programme allows children to discover Franklin’s science and Georgian London in the building or in the classroom. The world’s only remaining home of Benjamin Franklin was opened to the public for the first time on 17 January 2006, on his 300th birthday, as a dynamic museum and educational facility. In 1998, as conservation got underway in the House, we found bones, both human and animal, under the floor of our Seminar Room (originally the garden in Franklin’s day).

Historical Trips - Book your next historical adventure

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin is known as a great American Patriot who signed the Declaration of Independence. He traveled widely throughout Europe and spent over a decade living in London. Interestingly, when his London home was renovated in 1998, restorers found a stunning secret hiding in the basement—human remains. From this point, every British government action created a counter reaction in the colonies. This was particularly intense in Massachusetts, whose colonial assembly, along with those for New Jersey and Georgia, had joined Pennsylvania in being represented by Franklin in London. Franklin, however, far from seeking to widen the divisions, fought long and hard for a rapprochement between Britain and its colonies.

During the Historical Experience the eighteenth century spaces serve as a stage for a drama that seamlessly blends live interpretation and cutting edge sound, lighting, and visual projection to tell the rich story of Franklin in London. Carers are admitted free of charge and visitors with disabilities qualify for concessionary tickets.

A building lease of the site of this house together with a building of the same width over Brewer’s Lane was granted on 12 June 1730, to William Nind, ironmonger, who mortgaged the property to John Hodson, gentleman, a few months later. Most have brick fronts with gauged dressings to the window openings, while the face to the two storeys have been ‘cemented’ (stuccoed) with false joints to give the illusion of masonry. The houses mostly consist of three storeys above the ground, basement, and iron railings which are in general contemporary with the buildings. Hundreds of the most beautiful historic houses, castles, and gardens across Britain offer our members free entry. Benjamin Franklin House is all about the story, so rather than bring in items unoriginal to the building, the rooms are unfurnished. We do, however, have some real treasures in our small collection, including Franklin’s Moroccan leather wallet.

According to Balisciano, Franklin wrote “charming letters” to her whenever one of the two were traveling. But because this is merely a small part of the space that would have been in the so-called garden at the back of the house, there are likely many more bones that remain unexcavated. Craven Street is the only one of Franklin’s many residences that still remains today. Almost approved for "redevelopment" in the late 20th century, it was saved by a charitable trust and reopened as a Museum and Education Center on the 300th anniversary of Franklin’s birth in 2006.

The "Student Science Centre" allows students to re-create experiments from Franklin's sojourn in London. Therefore, after Hewson married Polly, Franklin encouraged him to set up a private academy at Craven Street. The bones found at the house in the late 1990s are likely the very same ones used for educational purposes at this academy. The bones were first discovered in the late 1990s, while the Craven Street home underwent conservation repairs. For more than two centuries, hundreds of human bones have rested (in peace) under the London home of Benjamin Franklin — one of the founding fathers of the U.S. But the secret of these bones isn’t quite as horrific as you might suspect.

Until Houston’s discovery, it was unknown that he copied letters from Franklin. Claude-Anne Lopez, consulting editor to the Benjamin Franklin papers project at Yale University and author of “My Life With Benjamin Franklin,” said Houston’s discovery “will help round out our understanding of Franklin. In all, Houston found 47 letters Birch had reproduced that were written by Franklin, to him or about him in 1755, when the French and Indian War was starting to bloody the American continent. Regardless of the dubious origins of the bones, Balisciano says she believes that Franklin was thrilled about the underlying motive.

Since discovering the letters in November 2007, Houston has keep the secret to himself and a small coterie of Franklin experts. Now, he has written an article based on the letters for the April edition of the William and Mary Quarterly. He thought he might spend the day having fun with friends, but decided to make one more visit to the British Library.

The latter included Secretaries of State such as the Earl of Shelburne and successive Prime Ministers from the Earl of Bute onwards. Franklin Court was the site of the handsome brick home of Benjamin Franklin, who lived here while serving in the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention. The Franklin Court complex also includes a working reproduction of an 18th century printing office, an architectural/archeological exhibit, and an operating post office.

15 Modern House Colors for Your Home's Exterior

modern interior design paint colors

Sherwin-Agreeable Williams’s Gray is, without a doubt, among our top choices for a gray color for the bedroom walls. It’s a warm, stone-like tint that sits smack dab in the middle of true gray and beige. The undertone of the color is more yellow-orange than green, which is the predominant tone. It’s common to be overwhelmed by myriad options, from painted ceilings to accent walls and everything in between.

Salmon Pink + White + Stained Wood

With pops of nearly cobalt blue, this space is anything but average. Blue is extra calming, but a pop of bright colors can give it the oomph it needs. Kollar says her goal when crafting a palette is to start with a color that complements its surroundings. “Normally, we get our creative touches through architectural elements and artwork,” she says.

White and Seafoam Blue

Used as an accent in small doses this intense blue-green looks like summer in a paint can. Benjamin Moore’s Seattle Gray celebrates the area’s overcast, gray days. It’s a calming, neutral alternative to stark white walls, and makes a great backdrop for bold art or peaceful canvas in a room full of color and pattern.

While the colors I’ve curated have proven to be winners, they will not look 100% identical in your home as they do online, or even in someone else’s home. To learn how to fully style your home with modern organic design, read all 12 of my organic modern design rules in this article. You will typically find that most designers lean more heavily on modern styles for architecture.

The use of natural leather, stone, and wooden details helps form the connection to the outside world,' she adds. If most of your bedroom furniture is white or light wood, sticking to a more delicate color palette might be the most effective design choice. In general, darker furniture works well with more deep and richer tones. This color palette that is lively and subtle can be created using various tones of lavender and light lilac since these colors give off an air of calm for modern bedroom designs. Warm neutrals like whites, beiges, and tans are frequently used as the basis for modern bedroom color schemes. When it comes to naming the best interior paint colors, there's an insurmountable number of hues from which to choose.

In that case, you might adore Sherwin-Williams Cachet Cream’s gentleness (SW 6365). This delicate shade of peachy neutral yellow is ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, or foyers. Cachet Cream’s underlying peach makes it go nicely with reddish wood, and its ginger tones will get stronger around green accents. Even though it has a rooted and organic character, this deep golden amber has a robust flavor.

Add a dash of minimalism to create an organic modern space where beauty and function go hand in hand. When you close your eyes and picture the perfect space for feeling at ease, it’s no surprise you might be thinking of the family room. It’s a warm and welcoming place where memories are made, and everyone feels at home.

Generally, organic modern styles lean more heavily one way or the other. It is best to choose a dominating style that will anchor your overall home design. Organic elements are classified by materials that originate in nature. Natural stone, wood materials, leather, and natural fabrics like linen and cotton, can all be included as organic materials. Organic modern design is a beautiful combination of two opposing design styles. There are many ways to incorporate warm gray into your home’s decor, making it an excellent choice for those who like to experiment with different styles.

White + Pink

The right interior paint can turn any room in your home into an extraordinary space. Anyone in need of more off-white options to sample test should try Benjamin Moore's White Dove. "To me, it is the perfect shade of a classic, warm white," designer Natalie Chong says. "It’s white, ivory, and peach all rolled into one," designer Sara Hillery says. For a light shade that has a wow-factor, Woodlawn Blue by Benjamin Moore is one to consider.

Brown furniture is sometimes considered uninteresting, yet in the proper context, it may look chic. Selecting the right wall colors will elevate even your least-favorite brown furniture. Follow these paint color ideas to showcase your grandmother’s mahogany dining room table or a sleek chocolate-brown sofa. In addition to looking elegant and trendy, gray carpets set the tone for a modern area that is cool and contemporary. It provides a blank canvas against which you can decorate practically any color. Your streamlined gray carpeting is compatible with many color palettes, including Aquas, greens, bright, intense hues, and black and white.

"The key with making this simple color palette work is layering in texture, which you can do by varying up the paint finishes." "A medium green like this bold emerald shade paired with warm neutrals, like tan, is my current favorite color scheme," Mary Patton, the owner of Mary Patton Design says. "Calke Green by Farrow & Ball is the perfect shade to try a floor-to-ceiling paint job."

The Club’s expansion to second-tier cities like Toronto and Chicago, and in the future Charleston, South Carolina, has further called into question its exclusivity. Soho House first opened in London in 1995 with just one location. And the Soho House brand comprises more than its famously members-only clubs. Soho House owns restaurants all over the world (restaurants that anyone can go to), has a burgeoning e-commerce operation, and, over the past 25-plus years, has established its presence as a global hospitality brand. Roll with the high-brow, martini-sipping crowd at Grand Bar & Lounge at the SoHo Grand Hotel. For a more laid-back scene, Kenn’s Broome Street Bar is a neighborhood favorite, along with SoHo Park, an outdoor restaurant/garden perfect for downing a few beers with old friends. If dancing is your thing, bring your friends to S.O.B.’s and break it down to live Brazilian, reggae, R&B and, hip-hop tunes.

Soho House now has 43 clubs and an extensive restaurant portfolio, including London restaurants Dean Street Townhouse and Cafe Monico and international chains Cecconi’s and Dirty Burger. Even after requesting that members not wear suits and ties at the club, the New York Soho House “didn’t have the right feel anymore,” as Jones told the New York Post in 2010. A private 44-seat screening room on the fourth floor, a library, and small fitness center are all open to hotel guests, too.

“Sites come my way and our way, and we search around and work out whether it's the right location,” Jones explains. While many of central SoHo’s expansive loft spaces are now reserved for the millionaires who can afford to live high above the shopping crowds, the pre-war brick walk-ups in western SoHo have seen renovations and an influx of upper-middle-class residents. Head further west towards the Hudson and find new condos and luxury apartment buildings with hefty price tags.

Some of the Soho House restaurants, like Venice-born Cecconi’s, were existing restaurants that Soho House took over, but others were expressly designed to feed the urban, creative class Soho House serves. To keep the clubs young and, thus, hip, members under 27 get a 50 percent discount on the annual membership until they turn 30. Those who live in select Soho House-approved cities without an actual Soho House, like Aspen, Milan, and Tokyo, can purchase an every-club membership for $2,500. For an additional fee, some Soho Houses also grant children access to club facilities. In 1995, restaurateur Jones opened the first Soho House in London when a space above his modest French restaurant Café Boheme became available. The door to the three-story house was too small for a restaurant, Jones told design magazine Dezeen in 2016, but just the right size to form the entryway to a private club.

But Soho House is “facing an existential crisis” according to a damning report from a Wall Street short selling firm that is betting the company’s stock price could fall to zero. If the understated entrance of Soho House is meant to throw off general bypassers, then it succeeds. The club was founded in London in the '90s, and British influences extend to the interior decor as well. The Ned comes from Soho House founder Nick Jones and billionaire investor Ron Burkle, whose public company Soho House & Co Inc. oversees both global brands. Members can choose to join just their local Soho House or opt in to access at Soho Houses around the world. “I love it because I’m a creative director and it’s a chance for me to network… and they have fun parties,” one pro-Soho source said.

The members-only Soho House was meant to stand apart from the stuffy clubs that were a hallmark of the London social scene. This club would cater to the creative types increasingly flocking to the city’s Soho neighborhood, especially young people working in film and media. “We wanted it to be creative and like-minded, and for people who were at ease with themselves,” Jones told Eater in 2017. The Soho House portfolio now includes more than a dozen different restaurants, many with multiple locations in cities with a Soho House club. Like the clubs, these restaurants are deliberately branded in carefully chosen, often transportive spaces. The barriers to entry, though, are much lower, and in addition to being free to enter, most restaurants have relatively affordable menus.

While the majority of those interviewed by The Post were quick to pan New York’s Soho House locations in the Meatpacking District, Lower East Side and Dumbo in Brooklyn, they noted the European locations made membership worth the price of admission. “Slashing members would help the brand but hurts profit… seems like a broken business model,” a director at Glass House Research, the firm behind the report, told The Post.

Does Soho House have restaurants? Is Cecconi’s a Soho House restaurant?

All have impressive (and expensive) minibars with still and sparkling water, snacks (including some from Dean & Deluca), full-size liquor bottles, Perrier Jouet champagne, and sodas. Along with fancy glassware, there's a cutting board, knife (for the fresh lime and lemon), a Nespresso coffee machine, and a proper tea set (this is a London-based company, after all). Upscale extras include REVO Heritage Sound Systems, Egyptian Cotton sheets, bathrobes, and slippers.

Soho House is over: Members ‘only go because everything else is closed’ as Wall Street bets on collapse

Instead, the new Soho House seems to be banking on professionals in creative-adjacent industries, such as chefs, tech workers, business owners, and as Jackson-Glidden noted, Nike employees. “We’re trying to reach a crowd that’s creative in their souls and like-minded,” Andrew Carnie, Soho House’s chief executive, said. During warmer months is when the rooftop comes alive with a small but fabulous rectangular pool lined with lounge chairs and beautiful people. The terrace provides spots to have drinks and meetings while munching on gourmet salads. Seating is first come, first serve here too, and poolside service is available.

World-class Cowshed Spa is a popular amenity at the hotel, as is the rooftop swimming pool and intimate screening room. Hotel guests have access to these amenities without having to be club members. In Soho House New York’s grand and rustic restaurant, hotel guests and members are invited to enjoy American Italian cuisine for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. Just steps away from the hotel is a range of delectable dining and drinking hotspots, like Dos Caminos, Buddakan, Cull & Pistol Oyster Bar, The Gilded Lily, and Toro NYC.

Open since 2003, The Soho House credits itself for importing cool to the area, while others attribute the start of gentrification to the designer boutiques. In D.C., Ned’s Club will house two private restaurants called the Loft Restaurant and Rooftop Terrace. Members can dine and drink while soaking up 12th-story views of President’s Park, the 82-acre landscaped grounds that call the White House and the U.S. Menu details are slim for now, other than the fact Ned’s plans to use local and global ingredients in its drinks and food. There’s no hard and fast rule for when and where a Soho House restaurant will open.

In December 2023, Soho House announced it was no longer admitting new members in New York, LA, or London after locations became too crowded and service suffered. But New Yorkers are skeptical that it will bring the club back to life. Mostly crowded and the scene feels oddly the opposite of creative,” one New Yorker in the fashion industry, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said of the current club. Located in New York City’s Meatpacking District, Soho House New York is a multifunctional space that provides a respite for guests and members alike.

Location

Adaptive reuse of century-old downtown buildings into dining destinations is a hot trend right now, with NYC import La Grande Boucherie having just debuted nearby inside the old Federal-American National Bank Building. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force said they captured the suspect, identified as Ellow Williams, after he was asked to report to his parole officer. He has at least four previous convictions, including the most recent one for a robbery in 2019.

Shoppers in SoHo find a wide variety of stores, shops, boutiques and sidewalk vendors selling artwork, apparel, and jewelry. Look out for designer stores such as Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Coach, Burberry, and Kate Spade. Larger chains such as H&M, J. Crew, Banana Republic, American Eagle Outfitters, and UNIQLO lure shoppers up and down Broadway.

The members-only social club concept caught on in New York, but not just among the young film and media industry players that defined the brand. Somehow, the "wrong crowd" managed to infiltrate New York’s Soho House — a crowd of corporate suits. SoHo is known for its mid-19th Century cast-iron architecture and to this day, it is the largest surviving cast-iron district in the world. Many commercial buildings along Broadway and Spring Street feature this type of construction, which is an elaborately molded cast-iron exterior bolted to brick walls. The Haughwout Building at 488 Broadway and the Gunther Building at 469 Broome Street display classic examples of cast-iron façades.SoHo is also famous for its loft-style apartments. In the 1970s, many of SoHo’s abandoned commercial and manufacturing buildings offered the perfect spaces for artists seeking large, well-lit interiors for their studios.

As artists moved in, the district became populated with galleries and eventually, SoHo became the center of the lower Manhattan art scene. By the 1980s, the neighborhood rose in socioeconomic status and became the new trendy Manhattan neighborhood. SoHo’s picturesque cobblestone streets, cast-iron buildings, and designer boutiques draw quite a crowd. The narrow streets are so packed that most city folk (and even SoHo residents themselves) tend to avoid the area, especially on weekends and around the holidays. But don’t swear off the SoHo neighborhood – visitors who check out the Manhattan district’s many quality stores, restaurants, and sidewalk vendors during off-peak hours are rarely disappointed. And because Jones loves food (and likely also because the food and alcohol sold at restaurants and in clubs generate revenue), Soho House is also focusing on improving the dining options for members.

Sunday inside the building near Thompson Street and Prince Street in SoHo, according to the NYPD. Detectives said the suspect followed a 23-year-old woman into the residential building, forcibly grabbed her and put her in a chokehold before sexually assaulting her. A suspected sexual predator was arrested after allegedly raping a woman inside an apartment building in Manhattan.

Desserts include more cheeses, chocolate almond torte, and strawberry rhubarb crisp. The cocktail list offers signature items like the Soho Mule -- a take on a classic Moscow Mule, and many wines are offered by the glass, carafe, and/or bottle. Soho House is smack in the center of Manhattan's Meatpacking District -- a trendy nabe adjacent to Chelsea and West Village. The area's name refers to its historical past as home to hundreds of slaughterhouses and meat processing plants; later, it was a cruising ground for prostitutes. These days, after a major transformation, it has become a fashionable neighborhood with a lively nightlife scene.

The members club, which requires aspiring members to submit an application and list existing members as referrals, ballooned by more than 100,000 people during Covid. Following the prediction, reports surfaced Soho House, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, could be taken private by controlling shareholder and billionaire film producer Ron Burkle. It also rejected the Glass House report alleging it was riddled with inaccuracies. Check out the SoHo piers along the Hudson or lounge on the grass of the Hudson River Park. Mosey along the river or hop on your bike or roller-blades and head south for great views of the downtown Manhattan skyline.

For 20+ years we've scoured the earth, evaluating hotels that meet every taste and budget, creating a hand-picked selection that's proven and inspired. In fact, our painstaking curation led to Michelin making us the official hotel selection of their legendary MICHELIN Guide. The cocktail hour is prime time, and drinks flow until late at night. The age range is wide (there's even a special membership for women ages 27 and under) but strict house rules -- like no pairs in the toilets -- help ensure the party atmosphere stays classy. The front desk is heavily guarded by a small team of polished and friendly staff that greets members, visitors of members, and hotel guests. Check-in is personal -- sometimes even done by the General Manager himself -- and then guests are whizzed up to their rooms via one of two elevators.

Huffman and Company, Sage Partners, and BUF Studios have the pleasure to design one of the final pieces of this decade-long master planning effort. With a majority of the site already in place or under construction prior to this project’s commencement, BUF Studio chose to provide full architectural and MEP engineering services in order to navigate some very tight site constraints. The result utilizes every square inch of available space within each of the 28 property boundaries.

Currently, they are collaborating with vascular clinics in the UBMD Physicians’ Group where the team recruits patients in the technology evaluation and clinical study.

The namesake of the company originates from a story that took place in the plains of North America; during a storm, cattle could be seen running away, while the buffalo would turn and face the storm head-on, enabling them to endure it for a shorter period of time. As in the story, when the challenges and complexities of a project are first identified, our team at BUF strives to tackle them head-on for the success of our clients. The blue “+” badge denotes that a project has won a prestigious A+Award as described above. Hovering over the badge reveals details of the award, including award category, year, and whether the project won the jury or popular choice award. A diverse digital database that acts as a valuable guide in gaining insight and information about a product directly from the manufacturer, and serves as a rich reference point in developing a project or scheme.

Evolving from a generalist nature of practice to a more specified studio has allowed for a comprehensive understanding of creative problem solving and an opportunity to view design challenges from multiple perspectives. This is due to the fact that current approaches, such as Peer Teaching or literacy programs, falter in the face of accessibility challenges rooted in social and psychological circumstances, prompting individuals to discontinue the learning process. Non-profit organization The World Literacy Foundation sets out to tackle this, striving to ensure that every child, regardless of geographic location, has the opportunity to acquire literacy skills and resources to reach their full potential. The Literacy Pen, a small devices that latches on to any standard pen, supports this endeavor with its technological features and accessible design.

Founded in 2016 as a YouTube Channel named Buff Tutorial, our institute officially established itself in 2018, initially focusing on designing courses. Over time, we expanded our offerings to include a diverse range of IT and Creative Multimedia courses tailored to various industries. We should enjoy what we are working on and who we are working with every single day. Our aim is to develop a team that is resilient, diverse, and thoughtful, aligning with clients that have similar goals, so that we can work together solving problems that result in a continuously challenging and rewarding environment. BUF works closely with Producers and Directors as early in the process as possible to craft tailor made services that compliment their budgetary and artistic needs.

If you're really trying to model an empty message (as opposed to a message whose shape you're not yet sure about) andyou're sure the message will always remain empty, then using Empty is fine. However, using custom empty request andresponse types is much more future-proof. As a consequence, you shouldn't import and use Empty if your RPC doesn't happen to have any request or response datayet. You should instead define a custom empty request and/or response message per RPC.

The Literacy Pen by The World Literacy Foundation and Media.Monks is a groundbreaking educational device designed to enable illiterate individuals to start writing and learning to read, instantly. Open source and compatible with all standard pens on the market, it utilizes an innovative method that combines technology with the essential elements of traditional processes. Users only need to connect the device to their pen and speak their desired words into the built-in microphone. The voice dictation technology then accurately transcribes these words onto the digital screen, letter by letter, facilitating direct copying onto paper and enhancing the learning process for all. The device further ensures an effective learning experience by focusing on key aspects of literacy development, such as written and visual repetition.

1 3 Profile Investigator Martyr in Human Design Knowledge Base

1 3 profile human design

Understanding and embracing your unique role as a 1/3 Generator is key to living in alignment with your true self. Your investigative nature means you may uncover new information that could necessitate a change in course. First, understand that frustration is not necessarily a negative state. Instead, it’s a sign that you’re not in alignment with your true nature or not honoring your Sacral response. Regular self-reflection and self-improvement activities can strengthen your foundation, providing a steady base for you to navigate the world.

Exploring 1/3 Investigator Martyr Profile in Human Design

Honor your yearning for knowledge and balance that yearning by getting your hands into your explorations. You are here to move your research forward and discover something new. You oscillate back and forth between research and experiments. The power of your research and experimentation is here to change the game in order for you to live your highest expression. Balance your yearning to research with your desire to experiment and experience.

Value Every Experience

Does it seem more comfortable to know that if you shy away from the experiences, that seemingly, nothing will ‘go wrong’? But as a 3rd line person, that only keeps you away from your journey of self discovery, it blocks you from finding your path. It silently creates a restlessness within you that will one day explode and you’ll find yourself questioning WHY you ever lived like that. As a 3rd line person, it’s great to get familiar with being uncomfortable and still being able to back yourself to give it a go.

1 3 profile human design

Conclusion: Embracing the Journey

The ISTP profile clearly has traits of both the first line of the Investigator and the third line of the Martyr in common with the 1/3. Amiable; likes to discover by testing theories and learning through life experiences, failure, and the process of trial and error. The deepest fear of line 1 in the 1/3 profile is the fear of the unknown and unawareness. When building a relationship, the 1/3 is in for a long vetting process.

Plus, there is a real need to actually try it for themselves, no matter how many people are telling them to 'just do it this way'. A beautiful, but oftentimes, bumpy road of trial and error. Because you are here to let others know what you’ve tried and if it worked or if it didn’t work. You get to guide those who seek you out (Projector magic!) into their greatness simply through all you have experienced in life. Gaining knowledge through sources that feel good for you.

The Interplay of Depth and Experience

Then the person speaks, and it's pessimistic because it's like hold on a minute. I know that because I'm interacting at that pessimistic level. They will adapt, but they will continue to go, move forward, test, and retest things because that's what it's designed to do.

There can be a lot of insecurity and impostor syndrome that comes with this. You have to actually work with clients to gain experience you can’t just read about it. These are people who are constantly trying to poke holes in things.

The Challenges of the 1/3 Investigator Martyr Profile in Human Design

This quiet time can offer invaluable insights about yourself and your life. Firstly, the 1/3 Projector profile is known for its investigative nature. As a 1/3 Projector, you have a natural curiosity that drives you to explore and understand the world around you. Third, consider the trial and error aspect of your design. Not every decision will lead to success, and that’s okay.

Human Design 1/3 Profile – Investigator Martyr

This is how people experience you inside your type, incarnation cross, and activations. Your mind, your healthy psychology, is going to investigate. It is going to become an authority of whatever field you're in. Maybe you're a doctor, engineer, psychologist, farmer, or dog walker. Whatever your field of authority is, you are going to investigate it so that you can be the authority. From business strategy and tech consulting to personal coaching, the 1/3 profile can cater to a range of consultancy niches.

If you want to stay around in the free world and whatever that's costing you, it's up to you. As a third-line, I know what price I have to pay and what other people have to pay, and the cost of not stepping into your own self-mastery. I know that because as a third line, that's what we teach.

Your profile must also be considered in relation to your type, because its energy is expressed accordingly and determines how we behave as unique beings. For example, a 2/4 Projector will experience and manifest in different ways to a 2/4 Manifesting Generator. Learn about the role of the 6 profile lines in Human Design, and how they work together within the context of each of the 12 Human Design profiles. Put together the aspects of the 1-3 profile provide us with experts on how to do things and more importantly how not too!

The combination of Line 1 and Line 3 in the 1/3 Profile creates a dynamic and resourceful individual who is dedicated to uniquely establishing knowledge and truth.

This journey is not always easy, but it’s deeply rewarding. As a 1/3 profile, you have a natural desire to understand and learn from experiences. You may find yourself drawn to understand others on a deeper level, exploring the foundations of your relationships and learning from the shared experiences. This can make you a supportive and insightful partner or friend.

I studied that having 1 as my first number also meant I’m here primarily for the inner journey vs outer. This hit home because I’ve always been in my own little world even as a child. I find that when I am living for myself I help others to be more authentic just by leading by example. Not highly influenced or affected by others but always curious to listen to every angle. When I studied my 1/3 and realized 1 is the investigator it made a lot of sense. Finding truth and looking for a sturdy base to stand on for whatever the case may be.

However, the Manifestor energy is not designed to work consistently like the Generator or Manifesting Generator. Instead, it operates in spurts, providing bursts of energy for initiation and innovation. Afterward, a rest period is necessary for recuperation, which is essential for maintaining your well-being. As a 1/3 Projector, waiting for the invitation can be a powerful practice for decision-making and relationships.

The nature of the 1/3 profile will lead you to build successful relationships. First and foremost, the 1/3 needs to gain clarity in their romantic intentions – are you wanting to build a relationship, or are you wanting romantic company? Honesty with yourself, and your potential partners, will make sure no one is getting their hopes up.

First look: Inside the new Ritz-Carlton cruise ship Evrima, which finally debuts this week

ritz-carlton cruise

So on these cabins, they compensated by having the balcony and living room area on Deck 5, while the bedroom and bathroom are located on Deck 4. While the Owner's suites are Evrima's most impressive cabins, the 2-Story Loft Suites stood out as the most unusual. But instead of having an open loft layout, they look like two separate cabins on Decks 4 and 5 that are connected by a narrow staircase (and each level has its own entrance). You’ll first need to redeem 180,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for $1,000 savings on the cruise fare.

Observation Terrace

Shirts and shoes are required throughout the yacht in the evening, even if you're sitting by the pool. Even if you don't plan to get in the water, The Marina is an ideal spot to spend a sunny day. In addition to the exercise equipment, you can also sign up for personal training sessions (30 minutes starting at $75), private yoga sessions (an hour starts at $100) and fitness consultations (starting at $275).

If you love transatlantic sailings, check out Evrima's 13-night April 14 itinerary that departs San Juan and arrives in Lisbon, Portugal with calls on Hamilton, Bermuda; Horta and Ponta Delgada in The Azores; plus nine sea days. Way back in 2017, executives at The Ritz-Carlton announced the development of a line of brand-new yachts that would supposedly change the face of luxury cruising — at least for Marriott loyalists and anyone that prefers a small-ship experience. The launch of the line was delayed for three years due to a variety of circumstances that included slowdowns at the shipyard, the pandemic and moving its first yacht to a new shipyard for completion. So it was a thrilling moment when its first ship, Evrima, welcomed guests in Barcelona on Saturday. Evrima was named for a word of Greek origin that means “discovery.” Explore five restaurants and six lounges; schedule a treatment at The Ritz-Carlton Spa; enjoy a day on the water from the aft marina; or dance under the stars in The Observation Lounge.

How To Redeem Marriott Points on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Sailings

The fact that you can access any of these 14 suites from Decks 4 or 5 is a pretty neat feature. But quirkiness comes at a price, and we're not talking about the $14,000 per passenger cost of sailing in a Loft Suite. Although their total space is 611 square feet (plus the 81-square-foot terrace), these cabins feel a bit too cramped due to essentially being two 300-square-foot cabins.

If you decide to redeem points for a yacht sailing, you’ll need to do it in specified increments. To start, you can redeem 180,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for $1,000 in savings on the cruise fare. Then points can be redeemed in increments of 90,000 for a $500 savings.

Members will also earn one Elite Night Credit per night (which counts toward Marriott Bonvoy elite status) and can enjoy a private members-only reception. The higher your status, the more perks you'll have access to, including priority boarding and departure, complimentary laundry services during your cruise, and early access to reservations at S.E.A., among others (depending on your level of status). I ended my night on my private balcony wrapped in a Frette robe, transfixed by the waves of the Balearic Sea rhythmically foaming and curling against the ship. There was plenty of space inside my 429-square-foot Signature Suite to sprawl — a full tub and double vanity in the bathroom, a sitting area, a dining table, and a king-size bed.

Adding a bit of privacy, the convertible sleeper sofa in this stateroom is on the upper level that's otherwise devoted to living/dining space. The terrace is also on the upper level, at 76 square feet, and downstairs features a panoramic picture window for sea views. It’s almost like you’re spending the night in someone’s home (which just so happens to be a 624-foot mega yacht). There were some service issues on the inaugural sailing that I joined (no doubt the result of staffing and sourcing shortages) but each snag was met with a graceful recovery or some spell-binding experience that would make you forget. Servers and deck crew are cordially chatty, full of recommendations, and can be one in the same at times—you may notice some swapping their daytime deck uniform for server’s clothes to pour your wine or bartend in the evenings.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Cruises to Denmark

The first Caribbean cruise is due to set sail on January 25, 2026 and runs through to February 1, 2026. This cruise costs $29,900 USD per suite per voyage and starts in Barbados, routing via — Marina Day Mayreau — St Lucia – Martinique – Antigua and ending up in Aruba. Caribbean voyages start at $5,100 per week per person, and Mediterranean voyages at $6,400 per person, according to CNN. For the hefty price, the brand is committed to offering an experience worth the ticket. While onboard, guests will have access to multiple fine dining locations, a gym, access to water sports from the yacht’s marina, performances from musicians, and expert-lead talks and lectures. Sotheby’s-educated art concierge Rafaella Vitale, from the London art advisory world, gushed about the private tours she was planning to do with guests and the mini-auctions she’d curate for each sailing.

Enjoy that out on your private balcony before getting to know the intricacies of your cabin. All suites offer a king-size bed with high-end Frette linens, digital flat-screen TV, a minibar stocked with your preferences (bottled water is Perrier) and an in-suite safe. Each suite has a Nespresso machine and a selection of complimentary specially roasted coffee and teas from Illy Cafè and Dammann Frères. If you want hypoallergenic pillows, those are available upon request. According to the cruise line, it has an eye toward sustainability.

Although Evrima currently stands as Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's sole vessel in the fleet, the company has announced the introduction of two new yachts. Ilma is set to arrive in 2024 and will be a larger ship, with capacity for 456 guests. In 2025, the luxury line will welcome Luminara, which is expected to be similar to sister ship Ilma. The Bonvoy link also makes Evrima a more fertile ground for multigenerational travelers. Notably, the ship is equipped with a children's playroom -- called Ritz's Kids -- on Deck 8 that's open for children 4 to 12 years of age (for a fee; $45 per child for three hours). Yet according to Prothero, most sailings have only had a handful of children on board, with holiday sailings having a few more than the norm.

Guests will explore under-the-radar islands steeped in culture and history, offering a variety of experiences that go above and beyond the ordinary of Mediterranean sailings. We have already outlined how to book the best deal on a Ritz-Carlton Yacht. This is to book with an official Ritz-Carlton Virtuoso travel agency like our own luxury travel concierge. Our personalized agents will help you work out which suite and itinerary is right for you. But it's wise to pack some non-drowsy motion sickness medicine for any rough sailings spent in the interior of the ship, especially if you're sensitive to vertigo.

The line tapped Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, to build ships two and three, and Ilma and Luminara will be much larger than Evrima. They'll be 171 feet longer than their sister ship and measure 46,750 gross register tons compared with Evrima's roughly 24,000 gross register tons. Like Evrima, the second and third ships will be all-suite ships, but they will feature 228 suites instead of 149. Additionally, the next-generation ships will have a higher percentage of larger suites than Evrima. One of our favorite Mediterranean voyages runs from 20 March to 28 March 2026, with fares starting from $29,500 per suite per voyage in USD and routing from Malaga — Menorca — La Joliette — Saint Tropez — Isola Di Ponza — Trapani — Gozo — Valletta.
